Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Kansas Board of Regents
Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship — Summary and Requirements
Overview
- The Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship supports students enrolled in Kansas Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) programs. Recipients agree to a service commitment in Kansas: one year of nursing employment for each year of scholarship funding received. New awardees must sign a promissory note with the State of Kansas.
Key Deadlines
- FAFSA: complete and submit by April 1 (priority).
- State of Kansas Student Aid Application: submit online at sfa.kansasregents.gov by May 1 (priority date).
Eligibility
- Must be accepted into an approved Kansas LPN or RN program (pre-nursing coursework is not eligible for funding).
- Must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours per term.
- New recipients sign a promissory note. Renewal applicants are those who received this scholarship in the prior year.
- Applicants may complete the FAFSA and the State application; priority consideration is given to timely submissions.
Sponsorship (optional, increases award)
- Students may optionally have an eligible sponsor, which increases the scholarship amount. A sponsor is any Kansas-licensed employer of LPNs or RNs such as:
- adult care homes
- psychiatric hospitals
- mental health or treatment facilities
- medical care facilities
- home health agencies
- local health departments
- state agencies
- Sponsors must be located outside these counties: Butler, Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, Reno, Riley, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee, and Wyandotte.
- If a student has a sponsor, that employer must provide employment to the recipient upon licensure, and the recipient is required to work for that sponsoring facility to satisfy the service obligation.
- Preference in awarding is given to sponsorships from mental health centers or treatment facilities.
- A higher scholarship amount is available to students with an eligible sponsor located in a rural opportunity zone.
Award Amounts (enrolled in 12+ credit hours)
- Without a sponsor:
- LPN students: $4,000 per school year
- RN students: $5,000 per school year
- With an eligible sponsor:
- LPN students: $5,000 per school year
- RN students: $6,250 per school year
Selection Priority
- If applications exceed available funding, preference is given to renewal applicants and to students demonstrating the greatest financial need.
Recipient Service Obligation and Repayment
- After completing the nursing program and obtaining licensure, recipients must work full-time as an LPN or RN in Kansas for one year for each year of scholarship received. If sponsored, the recipient must work for the sponsoring facility.
- Failure to meet the service obligation requires repayment of the scholarship funds; interest will be added at a rate of 5%.
How to Apply
- Complete the FAFSA by April 1 (priority).
- Submit the State of Kansas Student Aid Application online at sfa.kansasregents.gov by May 1.
- Ensure acceptance and enrollment in an eligible Kansas LPN or RN program (12+ credit hours).
