The Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition in STEM is an ideal platform for K-12 students in the U.S and Canada to hone their critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork skills, either virtually or in person.

Who Can Participate?

The following criteria must be met by all student participants:

  • Participants must be citizens of the United States or Canada, residing within these countries, U.S. Territories, or attending a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) school abroad. They must be full-time students in a public, private, parochial, virtual school, or home school.
  • Participants must be 21 years old or younger.
  • Employees of the National Science Teaching Association, NSTA board members, ExploraVision judges, and their immediate family members are not eligible to participate.
  • Students who have previously been regional or national finalists in ExploraVision can only participate in future competitions with a new team, i.e., with students who have not been ExploraVision regional or national finalists before.
  • Students must participate in teams of 2-4, under the guidance of a teacher/coach and an optional mentor. Individual entries are not accepted.
  • Each student can submit only one project per year, but a teacher/coach can be involved in multiple projects within the same year.

The following rules apply to all coaches:

  • Coaches must be at least 21 years old.
  • Coaches can be teachers, coaches, counselors, youth organization leaders, or parents/guardians.
  • Coaches must be acquainted with at least one student on the team.
  • Coaches cannot serve as judges in the same competition year.

All projects must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Projects that have previously won at the regional and/or national level of ExploraVision cannot be resubmitted in subsequent years.
  • Projects that have won prizes in other competitions cannot be submitted.
  • AI and the tool ChatGPT can be utilized for brainstorming and/or researching project ideas. These should be used as aids, not as the sole resource for the project. Any information derived from these resources must be properly cited in the bibliography.

Competition Categories

Teams must select the appropriate category based on the age of the oldest team member. Each category will be evaluated separately, taking into account the abilities of students in those grades. 

The four categories in ExploraVision are:

  • Primary Level (Grades K – 3)
  • Upper Elementary Level (Grades 4 – 6)
  • Middle Level (Grades 7 – 9)
  • High School Level (Grades 10 – 12)

Project Submission Guidelines

A complete project submission must include:

  • A title (up to 50 characters)
  • An abstract (up to 150 words)
  • The project description (up to 11 pages)
  • A bibliography
  • Five sample Web pages
