William C. Doherty Scholarship Fund
The William C. Doherty Scholarship Fund is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to support children of NALC members pursuing undergraduate degrees. The fund awards five renewable scholarships of $4,000 each. It is financed through contributions and administered by the NALC Scholarship Committee. Contributions and correspondence for the fund may be mailed to the NALC address listed below.
Description: The scholarship recognizes the service of William C. Doherty, NALC president from 1941 to 1962, and supports eligibility-based undergraduate study.
Award Value: Five renewable scholarships, each valued at $4,000 per year.

Eligibility
Eligibility is limited to children of NALC members in good standing and is primarily aimed at high school seniors entering undergraduate study. Eligible relationships include biological children, legally adopted children, stepchildren, and grandchildren who live with the member in a regular parent-child relationship. The sponsoring NALC member must have been in good standing for at least one year prior to application. The application requires signatures from the NALC member and an officer of the member’s local NALC branch.
Eligibility: Applicant must be the son, daughter, legally adopted child, stepchild, or qualifying grandchild of an NALC member in good standing; applicant must be a high school senior at the time of application.
- Applicant must be related to an NALC member in good standing for at least one year.
- Stepchildren and grandchildren are eligible if living in a parent-child relationship.
- Application must be signed by the NALC member and a local branch officer.
Application Requirements and Timeline
Applicants must submit standardized test scores and supporting materials to NALC headquarters by the stated deadlines. All applicants are required to take the SAT or ACT during their junior or senior year and submit an original printout of scores. Biographical questionnaires and secondary school reports must also arrive by the same deadline. The preliminary application form (Doherty & Donelon Scholarships) must be completed and mailed to the scholarship committee address.

Application Timeline: Original SAT/ACT score printouts, biographical questionnaires, and secondary school reports must be received at NALC headquarters by midnight, March 31.

Regulations
Scholarship funds must be used for undergraduate study at an accredited college and recipients must comply with reporting and committee permissions for changes. Winners may accept additional college scholarships alongside the NALC award. Annual transcripts must be forwarded to the Scholarship Committee, and absences or interruptions require written requests for abeyance. The committee may cancel awards if the sponsoring NALC member is suspended or enters supervision.
Award Use: Scholarship is restricted to pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited college.
Academic Reporting and Changes: Recipients must submit an annual transcript; any school or course changes require prior permission from the NALC Scholarship Committee. Requests to hold the scholarship in abeyance for illness or other unusual conditions must be submitted in writing for committee review.
