Earl Warren Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
Applications are now open for the 2025–2026 Earl Warren Scholarship.
About the scholarship
The Earl Warren Scholarship honors the Honorable Earl Warren, who served as the 14th Chief Justice of the United States and previously as Governor of California. Under his leadership, the Warren Court played a pivotal role in ending school segregation and reshaping the nation’s legal framework.
Who should apply
Each year the scholarship is awarded to rising law students who demonstrate a strong dedication to racial justice and show exceptional promise for careers as civil rights or public interest attorneys. Applicants must be entering either their first or second year of full-time study at an accredited law school.
Award details and timeline
Recipients receive $15,000 annually for up to three years — a total of $45,000 — provided they continue to meet the scholarship requirements and remain in good academic standing. Final selections are made in mid‑August to early September, and all applicants will be informed of their application status.
Additional opportunities for scholars
Beyond financial support, Earl Warren Scholars may apply for competitive LDF internships, externships, or supervised research projects. These positions are limited and sought by many students each year; selection is not guaranteed and all interested scholars must submit separate applications.
