Introduction
The Walter Beall Scholarship supports students pursuing engineering, aeronautical engineering, or aviation-related degree programs at accredited colleges, universities, or technical schools in the United States. Awards are intended for U.S. citizens who maintain good academic standing while enrolled.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be FRA (Fleet Reserve Association) members, or the spouse, son, grandson, daughter, or granddaughter of an FRA member who is in good standing now or was in good standing at the time of death.
- The FRA member sponsor must have maintained continuous membership in good standing for at least two years prior to the date the award is made.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens and seeking degrees in Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or aviation-oriented fields at an accredited U.S. institution. Students must remain in good standing while the award is in effect.
Ineligible applicants
- Students who are currently attending a U.S. Military Academy or who are participating in a reserve officer candidate program and receiving financial assistance from that program are not eligible.
How recipients are chosen
Selections are made based on the applicant’s overall qualifications, including (but not limited to):
- Awards and honors
- Personal interests and goals
- Relevance of curriculum and career objectives
- Community and extracurricular involvement
- Grade point average
- Scholastic aptitude test scores
- Demonstrated financial need (evaluated by household income and educational costs)
Number and amount of awards
- The number of scholarships awarded each year is not fixed and depends on available funds.
- Individual grants typically range from $2,000 to $5,000 and are awarded considering merit, financial need, academic performance, and community engagement.
Renewal and reapplication
- Previous Walter Beall Scholarship recipients may reapply in subsequent years.
How to obtain and submit an application
- Download the application from the provided link (or request one). Complete the PDF and either email the finished form or mail it. Applications can be returned by emailing the completed PDF or by sending a physical copy (include a self-addressed stamped envelope if requesting paperwork) to:

Deadlines
- Requests for an application must be made before April 1 each year (if mailing a request, the envelope must arrive by April 1).
- Completed applications must be postmarked no later than midnight on April 15. Applications postmarked after April 15 will not be considered.
