Against The Grain Artistic Scholarship

Introduction
The Against The Grain Artistic Scholarship supports Asian American students pursuing study in the performing or visual arts, journalism, and mass communications by providing financial assistance and visibility.
Award
- One scholarship of $1,000, to be used for tuition and related fees.
- Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the recipient’s educational institution in the student’s name.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be at least 25% Asian and/or Pacific Islander by heritage.
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
- Be either a high school senior or a currently enrolled full‑time student at an accredited U.S. vocational school, community/junior college, or four‑year college/university, and intend to be a full‑time, degree‑seeking student (associate, bachelor, or master) in the upcoming academic year.
- Be planning to major in a field within the visual or performing arts, journalism, or mass communications (examples: film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.).
- Demonstrate leadership through community service, extracurricular involvement, or similar activities.
- Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 unweighted scale.
- Note: Immediate family members of Board members are not eligible.
Selection process
Applicants are evaluated using a point-based rating system across five areas. The candidate with the highest combined score will be awarded the scholarship. Judging categories:
- Quality of the application submission (essay and/or artistic portfolio)
- Academic achievement
- Leadership and community service contributions
- Letters of recommendation
- Phone or in-person interview with the selection committee
Conditions and requirements
- Award checks will be remitted directly to the recipient’s school in the student’s name.
- Scholarship recipients will be asked to produce a short (approximately 1 minute) “thank you” video for posting on the organization’s social media channels.
