Maxwell Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Edmund F. Maxwell Foundation
Introduction
The Edmund F. Maxwell Scholarship was created to help Western Washington high school seniors pursue a college education. For students beginning as freshmen in the 2026–27 academic year, the award amount is $5,000 per year. Recipients may renew the scholarship for up to three additional undergraduate years (a maximum of four years total) provided they make satisfactory progress toward their degree. A brief renewal application must be submitted annually.
Applicant Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Study at a Private, Accredited U.S. College or University: Applicants must plan to pursue a four-year degree at a U.S. accredited private institution (i.e., an institution that is not primarily funded by state government).
- Western Washington Residency: To qualify as a Western Washington resident, the student must have lived west of the Cascade Mountains and attended the last two years of high school (or been homeschooled) in that area.
- Standardized Test Scores (Optional for 2026–27, but strongly recommended): Although not required for the 2026 cycle, the Foundation generally targets entering freshmen with a combined SAT (Math + Evidence-Based Reading and Writing) score of 1200 or higher, or an ACT composite score greater than 26. The Trustees may, at their discretion, consider candidates with lower scores.

Supplemental Documents (Due May 29, 2026)
In addition to the online application, applicants are responsible for ensuring the Foundation receives the following supplemental items by the deadline.
1) High School Transcript
Submit an official transcript that includes senior year first quarter/semester grades via one of these methods:
- Mail: The Edmund F. Maxwell Foundation, PO Box 55548, Seattle, WA 98155
- Electronic delivery through Parchment (www.Parchment.com) — select “electronic delivery” and send to support@maxwell.org
- Email: A high school college counselor, principal or vice principal may email the transcript to support@maxwell.org
The Foundation will attach received transcripts to your application; they will be visible under the “My Application” tab in your account.
2) SAT/ACT Score Report (Optional but recommended for 2026–27)
If you choose to include test scores, the Foundation requires an official score report (screenshots will not be accepted). Acceptable delivery methods:
- Scores reported directly on your official high school transcript by school staff, OR
- Electronic delivery from the College Board or ACT to the Foundation. When ordering, request electronic delivery and use the institutional codes below:
- College Board: 6697
- ACT: 7900 (searching by code is more reliable than by institution name)
Note: Some students may be eligible for fee waivers for sending score reports through the College Board. Once the Foundation receives the official report, your SAT/ACT status will be updated on your application page. If you are not reporting scores, enter “N/A” in the SAT/ACT field on the application.
Scholarship Renewal
- Recipients who wish to continue receiving the award must reapply annually using the Foundation’s online scholarship renewal form for each year they are enrolled, for up to a total of four academic years.
- Renewal is contingent on continued eligibility and satisfactory academic progress. Recipients are expected to maintain standards consistent with the original award.
Additional Information
- The Maxwell Scholarship is intended to help high-achieving students cover part of their educational expenses. Recipients may also receive other forms of financial aid.
- This scholarship is not meant to replace institutional grants or scholarships provided by the student’s college, but it may supplant work-study awards or need-based loans.
- Some colleges reduce institutional aid when students receive outside scholarships. If a college is known to the Foundation to reduce aid under those circumstances, the Maxwell award may not be available at that school.
- Scholarship payments are made directly to the recipient’s educational institution.
- The Edmund F. Maxwell Foundation does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.
- If you receive need-based aid, an outside scholarship can sometimes affect your financial aid package. Consult your college’s financial aid office to understand any implications.
