Smith Scholarship Program
Scholarship Sponsored by Smith Foundation
Every year, the Smith Foundation offers monetary scholarships to deserving students in Alabama. The application period typically begins in the Fall, around September or October, and concludes in the first week of January. The announcement of the application period is made on the foundation's website and all high schools in the state are notified via written communication or phone calls to inform counselors, English teachers, and other school staff. To access the application, follow the instructions provided on the Smith Foundation's website.
The scholarships awarded by the Smith Foundation range from $500 to $20,000 for undergraduate studies. These scholarships are designed to supplement other forms of financial aid, excluding student loans, and are awarded after all other scholarships, grants, or aid have been applied. The Full Scholarship Program offers selected students mentorship, internship coaching, co-op, professional development guidance, and the chance to qualify for Study Abroad Scholarships. Exceptional students who complete the full program can apply for graduate and professional scholarships to further their education.
The Smith Scholarship Program is a rigorous program that demands high academic performance and active leadership involvement. Each participating university will have a team with team leaders who will provide assistance and supervise required tutoring, counseling, and cultural event attendance.
Smith scholars are required to participate in volunteer work, community service, and attend events and seminars sponsored by Smith. Above all, Smith Scholars should have a genuine desire to contribute to society and help others.
The scholarships are awarded in April for the following Fall and Spring academic year. Typically, between 10 and 15 full scholarships are awarded, with additional partial awards also available. Full scholarships can be renewed upon completion of a renewal application and adherence to the Foundation's guidelines.
To be eligible, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, be a graduate of an Alabama high school, and have demonstrated involvement in volunteer work and community service. Additionally, they must have overcome personal and financial challenges.
