SCNF Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by South Carolina Nurses Foundation
The South Carolina Nursing Foundation (SCNF) administers the following scholarships to support its mission of advancing nursing education and public health.
Evelyn Johnson Entrekin Scholarship
This award commemorates the late Evelyn Johnson Entrekin, a distinguished public health nursing leader in South Carolina. Ms. Entrekin served with SCDHEC for more than 20 years and guided her district to become the first in the state to earn national accreditation. The endowment is funded by her estate and additional gifts, and is designated for students pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
Nurses Care Scholarships — Graduate and Undergraduate
Established in 2002, the Nurses Care Specialty License Plate Initiative gives nurses and supporters of nursing a way to contribute to the profession while raising public awareness of nurses’ contributions. The “Nurses Care” specialty license plates may be purchased through the Department of Motor Vehicles; proceeds from the program provide both graduate and undergraduate nursing scholarships.
Palmetto Gold Undergraduate Scholarships
Funded by donations to the Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition and Scholarship Program and by proceeds from the Palmetto Gold Gala, these undergraduate scholarships are awarded annually. Each registered nursing undergraduate program in South Carolina receives one scholarship to distribute; recipients are selected by the nursing program faculty. Awards are presented in January and recipients are recognized at the Palmetto Gold Gala.
Renatta S. Loquist Scholarship for Graduate Nursing Education
Named for Renatta Loquist, a respected South Carolina nurse leader and past president of the Foundation who helped establish the Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition and Scholarship Program, this scholarship supports graduate nursing education. The first award was made in January 2008. Funding comes from contributions to the Palmetto Gold program and from the Palmetto Gold Steering Committee, a special committee of the SCNF. The recipient is acknowledged at the annual Palmetto Gold Gala. For details, please visit the Palmetto Gold webpages or speak with your nursing school faculty.
Virginia C. Phillips Scholarships
Created in 1979 to honor Virginia C. Phillips, a prominent South Carolina nursing and public health leader, this fund recognizes her extensive service — including her role as State Director of Public Health Nursing at SCDHEC from 1972–1979 and her tenure as President of SCNA from 1963–1965. Scholarships are awarded to one undergraduate and one graduate student who are committed to careers in community health/public health nursing.
